  • SALIDA DE EMERGENCIA
  • "I ended up in my neighbors will."

A few months ago, I moved into a new apartment building. First time living alone. First time realizing I have *no* idea how to cook rice without Googling it.
  • Anyway, my neighbor across the hall is an older lady named Mrs. Kaplan. She's like 80- something, walks with a cane that has a tiny built-in flashlight (respect), and wears a robe with embroidered cats on it.
  • Big grandma energy. One day, I helped her carry her groceries up the stairs because the elevator was broken. She gave me a butterscotch candy and said, "You're a good boy. Just like my grandson."*
  • I thought she was being sweet and nostalgic. Nope. She started calling me "Ben." My name is not Ben. But every time I corrected her, she just squinted at me and went, *"Don't be difficult, Ben."*
  • So I gave up. I became Ben. She'd knock on my door with Tupperware full of mysterious casseroles and say things like, *"Eat this. You're too skinny. Ben was too skinny too. Poor thing.”*
  • I figured hey, free food. Who am I to argue? Fast forward: one day she invites me to a "family dinner." I assume it's just her and maybe a cat. Nope.
  • I walk in, and half her *actual family* is there. They stare at me like, "Who is this guy?" And she proudly announces: *"Everyone, this is Ben. He's back from Tokyo."*
  • Now I'm locked into this *insane* roleplay where I apparently lived in Tokyo, work in "tech," and still play the trumpet. I haven't touched a trumpet since middle school band, but I nod and smile like I'm auditioning for a Netflix series.
  • Here's the twist: she *knows*. She later pulled me aside and said, "I know you're not Ben. But I like having you around."* Last week, she called me over to help fix her TV, and offhandedly mentioned,
  • *"You'll take the cat figurines when I'm gone, right? I already put it in the will."* So now... I'm inheriting cat figurines. Because I became someone else's grandson by accident.
  • And honestly? I think Ben would've wanted it that way.

  • Tondropper186 You are a good human Ben. Thank you for being you, and for being a bright spot in what's probably otherwise a dull world for that woman. RasDas OP I think we all need a "Mrs. Kaplan" in our lives. I didn't know I did until she adopted me. Still don't know what's in half her food, but the love's definitely real.

  • Excellent-Shape-2024 You know, we old folks, esp us who have no kids, appreciate guys like you. I met a lovely young man in my book club a few years ago who's become a good friend--he calls and checks on me, invites me to dinner, and is just generally a sweetheart who has become like a son. Won't he be surprised when I pass and he finds out he's getting several hundred thousand dollars from me? (sorry, don't have a cat collection to give him so he'll have to make do) lol. Maybe more of you young
  • QueenSaphire-0412 Thank you for being so awesome! Seems you both needed someone... the RIGHT someone... thank you for being there for her. You're a Beautiful Soul OP
  • Lev-chipmunks-alon7 There are two brothers living next door to us. We never really talked much. Everyone called them the vampires because they worked nights and they kept their blinds closed all the time (they slept during the day). Last September we had a hurricane and we were very scared. These two 30' something guys talked us through hooking up our generator (no power for 10 days) bringing us propane to run the generator. And food! I gave
  • them cookies and eggs (we have chickens and I doubled the cookies recipe because I was going to a party but the storm canceled it. ( who knew it rains 2 days before and 2 days after the eye! These guys are so sweet and they can fix anything! We are retired so they can borrow our ride lawnmower and my husband has just about any and all tools ever invented. We have enjoyed them so much. They are definitely in our will. The one got married last week and we sent over a card.
  • Teton2775 Enjoy the love. I lost both my "real" grandmothers fairly young but I gained a new one as a preteen for shoveling the sidewalk of an elderly neighbor when it snowed. She started to come to some of my school events and concerts and it was so wonderful for both of us since her own grandchildren lived too far away for her to make any everyday type things.
  • EhEhEhEINSTEIN I'm a self-employed in-home IT person in the oldest avg age state in the country. Most of my clients are elderly people, I feel like it's only a matter of time until this happens to me. The start is to just be cool. 99% of them are awesome. And at 37, I don't have any grandparents on either side of my family so it's kinda nice to get that energy. Most of their family is elsewhere or have moved away, it's really nice to be appreciated for the smallest things. I don't expect to be i
